Ever get to where you are so worked up about something you can’t sleep? Yeah, me too. Maybe once or twice a month, I get worked up about something that keeps me awake at night. Sometimes it is trial preparation, crafting opening or closing statements, a deadline, strategy, or a host of other problems. Nothing too serious. Nothing like the stress I was under as a police detective, but it does happen on occasion.
When this happens to me, the thoughts are coming into my brain so fast I can’t process them all. The flying thoughts are out of control, this is what keeps me up at night.
So here is what I do. THOUGHT MANAGEMENT instead of stress management. When the thoughts start flying, I bust out a legal pad and a pen. You know us lawyers always have a big supply of legal pads, even in these days of the paperless office. I start writing the thoughts down as they pop into my head, in longhand, in block print. Yes, it is a slow process but that is what makes it work. I can’t get every thought, they come in faster than I can write them down, but that is the point.
As I concentrate on writing every thought down, the thoughts slow down considerably. The thoughts slow to a point where they become manageable, this is usually the point where I fall asleep. I wake in the morning with the legal pad by my side. Later in the day, I will review the thoughts I wrote down. Usually, there is some very good information in those thoughts.
