Freedom from Cuba — Press Release

Miami, Florida — The Law Office of Patrick J. McGeehan, P.A, has been retained by Ms. Jennifer Valdes and Mr. Berardo Valdes, the parents of Melissa Acosta, 20, of West Kendal, Florida. Cuban authorities detained Melissa, an American Citizen, on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Jose Marti Airport in Havana.

Melissa was subsequently released to family members in Cuba where she remained until returning home on Monday, July 28, 2014. Melissa was not charged with any criminal violations. According to Cuban authorities, Melissa was a witness and not a perpetrator of any illegal acts. Authorities required her to remain in the country until they completed their investigation.

Melissa wants everyone to know that while in Cuba she was treated very well compassionately by the Cuban authorities. This experience was very emotional for Melissa, she is thrilled to be home and looks forward to being able to see her friends and catching up on all she missed while being in Cuba.

At this time the family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring support and prayers they have received.
